In the summer of 1816, Mary Shelley stayed at the Villa Diodati during a cold and rainy summer with Percy Shelley, Claire Clairmont, Lord Bryon, and Dr. Polidori where she was inspired to write the beginnings of what would become her masterpiece, Frankenstein.

In 1844, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote the short story, “The Artist of the Beautiful”. The story, written during the start of the Industrial Revolution in America, explores the artist’s place in this world through the character Owen Warland and his unrequited love for his former boss’s daughter.
